Types of painting

Today dishes for Khokhloma are the most popular variant of using Russian motifs in the interior. Interesting products can be bought in the store or do it yourself. There are two main types of painting in the Khokhloma style:

  • Riding;
  • Background

Horse painting is done with plastic brushstrokes on the surface, which is pre-cast. The wizard initially puts a picture in black or scarlet paint on the background of the future product. There are three formats of the ornament.

They depict sedge, belous, meadow, using curls and strokes of different intensity and character. The general background is complemented by small berries, spikelets and silver tints that enrich the background.

"Under the foliage" or "under the berry"

Masters work with large fatty strokes, through which they depict oval leaves and berries. Chamomiles, grapes, strawberries, currant berries and viburnum, bluebells, cranberries and gooseberries are most often painted.

It is a geometric figure consisting of a rhombus or square and a central element in the form of the sun. This type of painting is the most conventional and simple.

There are patterns where only one type of pattern is used. The richest and most sophisticated ornaments contain all types of patterns at once.

Background Khokhloma is a combination of a black or red background with a gold pattern. For writing of this kind, the following artistic methods are characteristic:

  • "Under the background." Initially, the master creates a pattern (fish, animalistic, plants, geometric compositions), and then fills the background with the appropriate color;
  • "Kudrin". This is an original technique that allows you to get a painted thing with an abundance of curly patterns. With the help of curls form any motifs and complex compositions (from simple "grass" to complex images of animals or birds).

Golden Khokhloma looks most impressive when gold ornaments are combined only with black and red. Background painting does not complement the other tones.

General technology concepts

Initially, the master made rough blanks of wood. In common people this occupation was called “to beat baklushi”. The excess wood was removed with a chisel, giving the desired shape to the workpiece. Products primed with vapa (clay). After priming, the blanks should dry out for at least 6 hours. Then the items covered with linseed oil. Usually masters did not stint and processed the future objects of a decor and life several balls of drying oil.

The next stage is intensive tinning. The surface of the workpiece was actively treated with aluminum powder. Now the product is ready for immediate painting.

Handpainted tableware will exude a special charm. Make an exclusive product can and beginner. However, before embarking on the decoration of selected products, it is better to practice on plain paper or whatman paper.

For the first lessons it is better to arm yourself with a simple brush and any paints. On paper, you can try to depict traditional floral motifs, smoothly moving on to more complex animal painting.
